Is there any way to turn off the highlights that are left over from the find facility "Highlight all items found"?

Editing the text after the find has resulted in the situation with the yellow mess all over the place as shown.

Many thanks as always for any help.

In menu View click on Highlight All Selected which is checked when strings are highlighted from a find command.

I wish this switch was in the Find dialog box or that there was mention of the switch in the View menu in the Find command "Highlight all items found" description in the online help! I use this feature rarely, I am constantly forgetting where it is and I cannot find it in the online help.

Hi, you can simply highlight all occurrences of the current word (or the selection using UE 22.10) by Ctrl+. Repeat this on another word to dismiss all highlights. Quick and simple :)

And there is the check box Highlight all items found in Find dialog. If you do not see it then you have to click on the button with gear wheel icon below the radio button In Current file/Selected text/all open files to show advanced options.

There are offered since UltraEdit for Windows v28.00 and UEStudio v21.00 at Advanced - Settings or Configuration - Search - Advanced for Highlight all occurrences of selected word the configuration settings:
  • Match case
  • Match whole word only
    • ... when selection is whole word only
The highlighting can be done also configurable with just double clicking on a word or with double clicking on a word with additionally holding Shift key. It is also possible to configure that double clicking on a word does not trigger highlighting of all occurrences of the selected word at all.

The settings give a user the full control on which strings are highlighted on double clicking a word without or with Shift hold or executing the command Highlighted all selected from ribbon/menu View or on pressing Ctrl+. without or with having something currently selected and no strings currently highlighted.

Hi,

it's been a while, but:
Is it only with the newer version of UE that this is easily possible with ESC when the focus is on the document?

Greetings
Frank

The ability to dismiss Highlight all highlighting by pressing key ESC was introduced with UltraEdit for Windows v26.00 released 2019-02-27 and UEStudio v19.00 released 2019-03-29.

Using UltraEdit for Mac 2023.0.0.25
(I looked to see if there were any updates. This appears to be latest.)

I've gone into Settings->Search->Advanced and unchecked the Use Persistent Highlight All.

Mostly this fixes things but when I do a search and replace in selected text (in column mode), I get that highlighting and hitting ESC does not clear it. I have to go to View->Highlight All Selected and uncheck it. I did notice there was a keyboard shortcut for CMD + . and that did work.

Still I guess I was hoping anyone knew of a way to say "no never do this".

** I know this is likely super low stakes and there is a workaround (using the menu option or shortcut) but it just kind of "rubs the neurospicy the wrong way". I've been using UltraEdit since the mid '90s (mostly the Windows version) and have been trying to get away from Windows - the MacOS version of UltraEdit is still the best text editor I've used on Mac but it's not quite to the same level of perfection that UltraEdit for Windows has achieved (sorry for the superlatives, but I've truly never been happier with a piece of software than I have been with UltraEdit for Windows over the years even if I've had minor annoyances, it's just worked so well and Mofi and the community have always been so helpful.)

A replace all in a rectangular selection in column editing mode does not result in highlighting all found and replaced strings in the selected area by UltraEdit for Windows v2025.1.0.31. I do not have a Mac and so do not know if UltraEdit for Mac highlights all the found and replaced strings in a rectangular selection in column editing mode.

UltraEdit for Windows v2025.1.0.31 highlights all found and replaced strings after a replace all executed on a typical selection made in normal editing mode. I am not aware of any configuration setting to prevent this highlighting of the found and replaced strings. However, any key press moving the caret without or with discarding the selection or modifying the selected text and any pointing device button click into the document window results in an automatic discard of the highlighting of the found and replaced strings in the selection.

I have never watched this before as usually never using Highlight all items found but this option is automatically disabled in the Find and Replace dialog window on the tabs Find and Replace on having either Selected text or All open files selected for the option In. It is a bit curious that a replace all in a selection in normal editing mode results in highlighting all found and replaced strings although the option Highlight all items found is disabled for this use case.

I suggest to report this unexpected and unwanted highlighting issue by email to the UltraEdit support.
