I use UltraEdit with Japanese on a daily basis, and I've never seen anything like that except when using third-party Japanese display tools like NJStar on UTF-8 text. Make sure you have Windows properly configured to handle Japanese, and make sure you're using an appropriate font.

UltraEdit can't currently handle this properly... I have the same problem with a different language. There are two workarounds I can think of. A little experimentation reveals what may be the problem. It looks like multi-line strings are enabled if there's a "String Chars" entry in the language definition, but not if there isn't. Try adding one to the language you're using and see if that helps...

Did you select "Japanese" instead of "Western" in the "Script" box in the "Set font..." dialog?

It's a nice idea in principle, but of little obvious value in practice. Plus, surely it's rather hard to implement in a general-purpose editor? Either it would have to be hardcoded into UltraEdit, like it is in most IDEs, or it would require a pretty complicated scripting language to define the synt...
