Is it possible to paste text from the clipboard into a document where the text in the document is replaced by the contents of the clipboard?

    TIA.

Thank you for your response, mrainey56, but I wanted to avoid having to select the text in the document. Can you imagine having to count the number of characters in EACH replacement string, and then selecting the right number of characters in the document :( ? I am attempting to fill in fields in a text based form.

I would have thought that switching to overstrike mode before pasting would allow the pasted text to replace the existing text but it doesn't seem to work. Maybe this is a bug?

Yes, this makes sense to me, but perhaps not to document editor program authors?

Pasting in column mode with overstrike mode also active lets you paste over the text without selecting it. But this breaks the undo chain and if the existing line is longer than the text which is pasted you will have a bad result line. Multiline pastes are also dangerous in this special edit mode. But you did not give us an example what you exactly want to do, so maybe switching to column mode with overstrike mode before pasting works for you.

Been there, done that! But the pasted text is still inserted (at least in version 8.20a+).
