Do you have plans on producing a U3 version that I can run on my U3 enabled USB Device?
I work at various client sites and at the moment all that is available U3 wise is EditPad Pro which doesn't support SFTP or seems to be as powerful as UE-32.
I have read that article on making UE<10 portable. but V12 isn't so.
U3 devices also provide the ability to tie your licencing model to the device.
Please ask IDM support by email and post its answer here. This is an user to user forum. IDM is not reading here all posts - see top of this page. An U3 version would be really helpful for support people.
However, my workaround solution with the batch file is working also with v12. The configuration settings are splitted up into several files, but all configuration files are always in the same directory as the INI. So copying all configuration files including the INI into the UltraEdit program directory is still possible and I use it daily to be able to switch the version quickly for answering forum posts. I have no UE or UES config files in the application data or Windows directory.

Hi Mofi, Thank you for the information. I did read your notes on portability. I didn't appreciate that IDM don't actively monitor the posts. I have asked the question to support and will post a response if I get one. I see a number of people are interested in this topic, and as you are a very active member, what is the best way to present a worthwhile case for this feature to IDM?
I will give your suggestion a try in the mean time, but I thought I read something about the licence key method changed in 12 that meant it was tied to the machine.
Best would be that all users who want an U3 version writes an feature request email to IDM support. The higher the number of users who request it the higher the chance that IDM will develop it.

Hi Mofi and everyone interested in U3 version of UE
Here's the response so far from IDM. I'm guessing the more people request this feature directly the higher the chance of them developing it.
Kind Regards
Jason

Hello Jason,
Thanks for your response.

There shouldn't be any issues here provided that you are the only user of the software. You wouldn't have to install your license on the client system.

I don't know what would be involved in this, but have entered a suggestion to consider this into our developers' database. This isn't currently being actively planned.

Correct. IDM collects the feature requests in a database. With every email of a user for the same feature the feature request becomes a higher priority in the database.

Just to chine in on this, v12 works very well as a portable version. You just need to ensure that all the required files are moved to the UE32 directory. Keeping UltraEdit on my Thumb Drive has significantly improved its usefulness!!!!

Does it leave registry entries on the host system?
By the way, there's no reason that a portable version of UltraEdit would need to be U3 compatible. U3 is pretty much just marketing hype. I'd prefer it to be just plain portable which mostly amounts to not using the registry.
I use UE12.20b+1 on my good old USB-Stick, as already stated, just make sure all files are in the UE dir on the stick.
Another thing is syntax-highlighting, make sure you START UE from the UE dir and that your path to the UE-file is current dir (this makes it fully movable anywhere you might want it).
And no, it doesn't leave reg-keys unless you make it do so.
If registry keys remain or not depends on your version of UltraEdit and what you do on the host system. For example v12.00 - v12.10 store the dialog settings for the dialog List Lines Containing String in the registry automatically. V12.20 store the settings in uedit32.ini. If you for example call UCL, it will automatically create registry entries because UCL does not use an INI. And last Windows XP does record many things. So you will always find uedit32.exe in the registry when leaving the host.
See also Running UEdit from a usb key. My posts there are not 100% correct for currently latest version 12.20b+1 of UE.

I don't really consider this 'leaving things on the host', as XP will always store these, no matter what program you run, but if people worry about those, then yes UE12.20b+1 also leaves things in the registry ;P
As far as settings go tho, I haven't found any 'leftovers' after closing UE down.
I don't worry so much about UE leaving artifacts on the computers I'm using, but there are several important limitations that a U3 version would deal with:
1. Configuration changes are not saved between program executions.
Most notably, I turn off the file backup option and turn on word wrapping, and a few other minor changes, which I have to make every time.
2. Doesn't save FTP accounts
I have nearly two dozen FTP accounts in my home UE software, but whenever I want to access an FTP from my USB drive, I have to re-enter the information.
3. Doesn't save file preferences
When UE is first installed, you chose which files you want to asociate it with. But you have to do that every time if it's running off a USB drive.
There's probably more, but that's enough for now, methinks.
