UC 4.20 seems to save the last mode, (binary|text|folder) and startup the next time with that mode. I would like the program to always start in text mode and not the last-used mode.
Currently there is no option to specify a default compare mode instead of last used mode. Write a feature request email to IDM support. IDM is currently working in UC 5.00, so it is a good time to write such a feature request.
As workaround you can specify on the command line of the shortcut you normally use to start UltraCompare Professional the option -t to force UC to start in normal text mode.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've submitted the following enhancement request to the support folks. Appreciate the explanation.
SPECIFY DEFAULT MODE IN UC
Description: There ought to be a way to specify the default mode in which UC should start. Currently, it saves the mode used last and always starts in that mode. Comment: This is useful where calling UC from a different product makes certain modes impractical, e.g., when specifying UC to do text comparisons with other programs. It must call the text mode, not directory mode, regardless of what was used last. Specifying the "-t" flag isn't possible in the configuration of the other program. Ideas: 1) QUICK FIX: Compile separate binary names with the -t or -d flags implied.
2) Add a configuration toggle to Remember Mode Used-Last and if unchecked, to specify one of the modes as the default.
