Weird Problem: Can't Vertically Scroll Help File

Since (at least) installing UltraEdit 12.00, I can't scroll the help file. I mean this just as it is written: If I open the help file, and the right pane content is too large to fit on one page, I can't view it. Here is what I'm talking about:

The down arrow key doesn't work. Page Down doesn't work. Ctrl+End doesn't work. I can do Ctrl+A, then select all, and paste the right pane content into UltraEdit as a text file, but can you imagine how inconvenient that is?

Please, don't tell me to uninstall/reinstall. I have. It doesn't help.

Advice or workable magical incantations welcome.

Does vertical scrolling fail only for the UE help or also for other HTML help files. Open one of the *.chm files in your windows\help directory and test it.

Which version of Internet Explorer do you have? Compiled HTML help files are shown with IE and its settings.

Only the UE help file. I have never seen this problem before.

I don't know of any possible MSIE setting that could make vertical scroll bars disappear.

I had this problem in a couple of past UE versions (v11 beta). I wrote IDM about it but never got an explanation. After a number of updates, the problem went away as mysteriously as it had appeared.

It only happened on one laptop computer. I have no idea what advice to give you.

This is a snippet of what I wrote IDM 12/27/04

"Attached screenshot of Help file shows lack of scrollbar and top of page has some text covered up. Can't move around at all in the page."

The HTML files inside the CHM files are created with RoboHelp. RoboHelp uses <body scroll=no> (an MS IE only property) to disable the scroll bar for the whole page and with help of CSS and Javascript the scroll bar is enabled for the content part of the page below the title which is positioned absolute. With this workaround for the CSS scrolling problems of IE, RoboHelp creates the effect that the title of the page is not part of the scrolled area.

So maybe the scrolling does not work on your computer because of a too restricted security option of IE because the CHM file needs Javascript. I can't tell you which setting it is because I have not further looked into the IE workaround of RoboHelp, how it really works and which setting of IE makes it stop to work. Maybe with this additional infos you can find the reason.

I have also seen on a computer that the MSDN helps of MS Visual Studio did not work. I can't remember exactly what was the reason but I think we turned off the Sun Java engine for IE and used again the MS Java engine for IE.

              Mofi,

              You're a good man.

I was able to cause removal of the scrollbar by disabling Active Scripting in the My Computer web content zone.

Oh cool; all I need to do in order to view the help file is reduce my local security. Sounds good. /sarcasm

Thanks for the help. I had actually been playing with the MSIE security settings, but for some reason (I blame sleep deprivation), I was screwing with the Internet zone. Not very smart.
