Hi all!

Why is this folder needed? It’s already over 2 GB on my PC — isn’t that a bit much? It appeared after updating to version 2025.2.0.24.

The folder recentdb in application data directory of UltraEdit and UEStudio is for storing the names and paths of files opened in the past in UltraEdit / UEStudio. The data are used on using the command palette and typing \ and the beginning of a file name for quick opening a file stored in perhaps unlimited opened files history, i.e. in the database files in the folder recentdb. That opened files history is not limited to the last x recently opened files history as displayed in the Recently opened files list in menu File respectively the ribbon File or in the File lists view. The recently opened files history for the menu/ribbon/file lists view is a different files history list with the file names stored in ue.vod respectively ues.vod in the section [Recent File List] in folder volatile in application data folder of UltraEdit / UEStudio.

It is safe to delete all the files in %APPDATA%\IDMComp\UltraEdit\recentdb respectively %APPDATA%\IDMComp\UEStudio\recentdb or the entire folder recentdb while no instance of UltraEdit or UEStudio is currently running.

There can be also opened Advanced - Settings or Configuration - Toolbars / menus - Miscellaneous in UE / UES and clicked on the button Clear history. That clears (nearly) all histories (recently opened/closed files, recently opened projects/workspaces, opened files history for command palette, finds history, replaces history, bookmarks history, code foldings history, etc.). The click on that button results in an immediate deletion of all files in the folder recentdb.

The folder recentdb exists since UltraEdit v2022.1 (v29.1.0.90) and UEStudio v2022.1 (v22.1.0.90) introducing the feature opening files from history using the command palette (by default with Ctrl+Shift+P) and typing \ and the beginning of a file name of a once opened file.

In my case this folder had a 34 GB file! That seems very strange. I have see this happen on multiple PCs, and leading to extreme memory use.
